Near Chinatown, there is a quaint little area of shophouses. This is Ann Siang Hill and Club Street. In the past, the shophouses were used for traditional Chinese clan associations and exclusive social clubs, but the area has since been transformed into a great hangout location. Soak in the charming atmosphere and take in the beautiful architecture which is a great mix of old and new.

Ann Siang Hill is a bustling row of restaurants, bars, cafes, concept stores and boutiques. An excellent place to chill at after work!

As this area also comprises of businesses, especially those in the creative line, it is a favourite hangout spot of young working professionals.

What can be found here: Quirky shops selling clothes, furniture and jewellery, restaurants, cafes and drinking holes housed in elegantly restored shophouses.

Spend some time at: The Little Drom Store, Shots, Woods in the Books

Haji Lane

In recent years, Haji Lane has been drawing in the younger crowds. Located at the Kampong Glam neighbourhood, this alleyway of pre-war shophouses is home to a variety of home-grown independent boutiques.

It is in the heart of the Muslim quarter, but there’s a distinctly different vibe here. For those who are sick of shopping at the typical gigantic malls, Haji Lane attracts those gravitating to a more original aesthetic. From clothing and interior decorations, ice cream parlours, and even tarot card readings, this is the perfect place to while away a lazy afternoon.

What can be found here: Local boutiques by young entrepreneurs, vintage shops and exotic restaurants and cafes.

Spend some time at:  The Blog Shop, Pluck, Straits Record, Café Le Caire, Salad Shop.

Dempsey Hill

A short distance away from Orchard Road, you can find the lush, quiet settings of Dempsey Hill. It is a small mini-precinct and within its 18 blocks, you can find diverse cuisines, chic boutiques, a farmer’s market, art spaces and wellness facilities.

Dempsey Hill was a former military stronghold, the site of the British army barracks and the Central Manpower Base of Singapore (CMPB) where men reported for military service. Now, it has become one of the city’s top lifestyle destinations as a result of a hip cluster of wining and dining establishments moving in.

So if you want to dine while immersed in an old world charm experience, Dempsey Hill, with its conserved colonial black-and-white buildings, is the place to be.

What can be found here: Wining and dining establishments , lifestyle retail shops, art galleries and beauty parlours.

Spend some time at: The White Rabbit, Jones the Grocer, Tippling Club, The Museum of Contemporary Arts.

Happy Deepavali!

Deepavali is the most important festival in the Hindu calendar. Known as the festival of lights, it is the celebration of good over evil and light over darkness.

Frasers Hospitality

There are many legends attributed to this festival that have been passed down through the generations and out of all legends, the main one is the story of Rama and Sita.  Lord Rama, the eldest son of Dashratha, the King of Ayodhya,  was exiled for 14 years. After the exile, in which he had put an end to the evil demon Ravana of Lanka, Rama returned to Ayodhya with his wife and brother, and was welcomed  by the people with rows of clay lamps that lit up his path. The lit lamps was a celebration of his triumph over evil.

In keeping with the tradition, oil lamps are lit during Deepavali in Indian households throughout the world. And if you are in Singapore, you can take part in the festivities by visiting Little India. This year the festival falls on 13th November and Little India is all decorated for the festivities.  Streets are lit up with dazzling lights and streamers and it is an explosion of festivity and vibrant colours all around.

There are also a variety of festive bazaars and cultural activities taking place during this period. One can find all kinds of traditional goodies like flower garlands, oil lamps and colourful Indian costumes here. The bazaars are very popular among people looking for traditional decorations or just soaking in the festive atmosphere.

Another event is the UTSAV Deepavali street parade, the biggest arts event in Little India. Taking place on Saturday, the 17th of November at Race Course Road, this event promises to be a wonderful display of Indian dance, music, culture and traditions.

So take a trip down to Little India, the heart of Deepavali, and bask in the unique culture of the Indian community and join in their celebrations!
